The IH Global Levels

IH schools worldwide relate their courses to the IH World Levels, an 8-point scale from Beginners to Advanced.

These 8 levels are also referenced to external levels and scales, primarily:

• the Common European Framework (CEF)
• the ALTE scale
• the CAMBRIDGE ESOL examinations
• other examinations (TOEFL, TOEIC)

 

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is a document produced by the Council of Europe, which seeks to provide guidance for institutions and individuals involved in language learning and teaching.

A1 Break-through	You have no previous knowledge of the language.		1	Beginner	Learners can communicate at a minimal level. They would have serious difficulties in an English-speaking environment.	0
A2 Way- Stage	Basic communication is possible with assistance and you understand simple sentences spoken slowly and clearly.	KET	2	Elementary	Learners can communicate at a basic level and can deal with some situations necessary to survive in an English-speaking environment. Their comprehension of English is limited but a foundation has been laid for further learning	1
			3	Pre-Inter- Mediate	Learners are able to communicate adequately in simple everyday situations. Their range of vocabulary and ability to manipulate grammatical structure is developing, as is their ability to comprehend oral and written English.	2 & 3
B1 Threshold	You can make effective and independent use of the language in familiar situations although there are still lapses in communication.	PET	4	Lower Inter- Mediate	Although their vocabulary and grammar are limited in range, learners are able to communicate in most basic everyday situations. They are beginning to deal confidently with authentic listening and reading material.	4
			5	Mid-Inter- Mediate	Learners are developing their language skills and can communicate quite fluently in most everyday situations. Their ability to express more complex ideas is beginning to develop, although their language is not always accurate.	5
B2 Vantage	Your use of the language is consistent and usually appro-priate but lapses in fluency and accuracy still occur in complex situations.	FCE	6	Upper Inter-mediate / Pre-Advanced	Learners are of approximately Cambridge First Certificate standard with a wide range of vocabulary and a command of all basic grammatical structures. They can use English in a variety of contexts and are beginning to appreciate many of the complexities of the language.	6 & 7
C1 Effective Operational Proficiency	You have a good command of the lang-uage. It is fluent, accurate and well-organized with only a few uncertainties in complex and difficult situations.	CAE	7	Lower Advanced	Learners are able to use a wide range of language effectively in a variety of contexts and can easily comprehend natural spoken and written English	8 & 9
C2 Mastery	You have an excellent command of the language and can tackle the most difficult tasks.	CPE	8	Upper Advanced	Learners are developing an understanding of and an ability to produce the subtleties and complexities of the language, although they may still require some work on accuracy. At the end of this course, students should be close to native speaker competence.	10 & 11

* Duration for each level at IH Cambridge Centar Podgorica is four mounts, twice a week for ninety  minutes.
